Travel Grants for Fellows and Graduate Students

The Scientific Program Committee will provide a limited number of travel grants for fellows and graduate students.

Award:
Transportation to/from Philadelphia (economy airfare, train fare, or reimbursed mileage up to $750), the conference registration fee, and 3-nights lodging

Requirements:
Nominee must 1) be a postdoctoral fellow or graduate student; 2) be presenting author on an abstract accepted at the conference, and 3) be attending the full meeting.

Selection:
In an effort to ensure the participation of the basic science community, all fellows and graduate students who have abstracts accepted will receive a travel grant (provided the box on the abstract form is checked and a nomination letter is submitted by the deadline).

Application Process:
Nominee should submit an abstract. Additionally, a letter of nomination/ recommendation (on official letterhead) from the applicant’s division chief, program director, or scientific mentor should be mailed or faxed to the Office of the Conference Secretariat (703-535-6899 fax).

Deadline:
The deadline for both abstract submission and receipt of recommendation letter is June 26, 2001.


International Scholarships

A limited number of scholarships to attend the conference will be awarded for scientists, clinicians, public health officials, and other health care workers based in developing countries working in the area of AIDS vaccine development and testing. It is expected that international scholarship recipients will currently be involved in or have plans to participate in extended Phase II and III vaccine research studies in the near future (involvement may include research, infrastructure development, logistical support, policy making, recruitment, and/or implementation).

Award:
The amount of the scholarship is based on financial need and may include: transportation to/from Philadelphia, the conference registration fee, and 3-nights lodging

Requirements:
Applicant must: 1) be interested in and familiar with HIV vaccine related research, development, and/or testing; 2) committed to setting up international collaborations on AIDS vaccine related projects; 3) have a commitment to share what was learned at the conference; and 4) be fluent in English.

Application Process:
Applicants should submit 1) an International Scholarship Application Form (in PDF below) or by calling 703-535-6863 and 2) a letter of recommendation (optional).

Selection:
Applications will be reviewed by the Scientific Program Committee; international scholarships will be awarded based upon the quality of the application. Preference will be given to applicants who have international collaborations and a track record in the field.

July 2, 2001 (applicants will be notified of the disposition of their application after July 23, 2001)


Community Scholarships

A limited number of scholarships will be awarded for community advocates working in the area of AIDS vaccines to attend the conference.

Award:
The amount of the scholarship is based on financial need and may include: transportation to/from Philadelphia, the conference registration fee, and 3-nights lodging

Requirements:
Applicant must: 1) be able to understand scientific reports of HIV vaccine related research, including abstracts, posters, and brief oral presentations of trial results; 2) be affiliated with an organization that is doing AIDS vaccine advocacy; 3) be involved in community outreach activities; 4) have a commitment to share what was learned at the conference; and 5) be fluent in English.

Applicants should submit 1) a Community Scholarship Application Form (in PDF below) or by calling 703-535-6863 and 2) a letter of recommendation from the organization with which the applicant is affiliated.

Selection:
Selection criteria for community scholarship awardees include: advocacy experience, outreach involvement, personal/professional development, and financial need. Preference will be given to applicants who work with and disseminate information to under-represented or at-risk populations.
